The Longwood area of eastern Brookline was originally part of Samuel Sewall’s large farming estate. The area began getting more developed when the Brookline Branch Railroad was developed. It was developed primarily with the intention of being a fashionable residential area in the 1850s by David Sears and Amos Adams Lawrence. Also by this time, David Sears had planted over fourteen thousand beech trees in the Longwood Area. This has come to be Longwood Park, and though there are not quite as many trees anymore, the green space is well treasured.
The original commercial hub of Brookline, Brookline Village was the first colonial settlement of importance in the Brookline area. Brookline Village served as a point of connection between Cambridge- nothing but a relatively small settlement where Harvard Square now stands- and Boston. Community activities largely centered around one Tavern, called the Punch Bowl Tavern, which was also a popular spot for soldiers to take a break during the revolution. This was such an influential spot for Brookline residents, that this neighborhood actually used to be called the Punch Bowl Village! Now, eateries and shops owned by locals line the streets- which are easily accessible by taking the D line Green line train to the “Brookline Village” stop.
The Fenway neighborhood is one of the iconic neighborhoods of Boston. Easily accessible from the orange and green MBTA lines, it is characterized by brownstone townhomes, brick walk-ups, and plenty of small businesses. In Fenway you will find plenty of fine stores and great schools such as: Northeastern University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Berklee College of Music, Mass College of Art and design and Harvard Medical School. Fenway is also home to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, two world renowned museums with iconic collections. Other points of interest in the Fenway area are the iconic Citgo sign in Kenmore square, plenty of sports bars, and of course, Fenway park, home of the Boston Red Sox.
